2007 David P. Byar Young Investigator Award Winners
The David P. Byar Young Investigator Award is given annually by the Biometrics Section to a new researcher in the Biometrics Section who presents an original manuscript at the Joint Statistical Meetings. T he award commemorates David Byar, an internationally known biostatistician, who made significant contributions to the development and application of statistical methods during his career at the National Cancer Institute. This year there were 30 papers submitted for the award, a substantial increase over last year. Due to the increased number of submissions the award committee consisted of ten rather than three judges: Karen Bandeen-Roche (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health), Tom Tenhave (University of Pennsylvania), Jeremy Taylor (University of Michigan), Mark Berliner (Ohio State University), DuBois Bowman (Emory University), Katie Kerr (University of Washington), Knashawn Morales (University of Pennsylvania), Bhramar Mukherjee (University of Michigan), Amita Manatunga (Emory University) and Diana Miglioretti ( Group Health Center for Health Studies). The committee ended up choosing one travel award winner in addition to the Byar award winner.
Egil Ferkingstad , Ph.D. Student at University of Oslo , is this year's winner of the David P Byar Young Investigator Award. He will receive a $1000 cash award during the JSM, for his paper, "Covariate-modulated false discovery rates."
Min Zhang , Ph.D. Student at Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University , is this year's travel award winner for the paper “Improving efficiency of inferences in randomized clinical trials using auxiliary covariates”. He will receive a $500 cash award to attend JSM and present the paper.
Each winner will receive a check and a certificate and plaque commemorating the award at the Biometrics Section Business Meeting 5:30-7:00 PM on Monday, July 30, 2007, at the JSM in Salt Lake City (Rm 155 B CC-Salt Palace Convention Center).
